Royals Sweep Competition on Day One of Region Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The #16 Warner Southern softball defeated the Thomas University Nighthawks 8-6 in their first game and cross town rival Webber International University Warriors 11-5 in the nightcap.  The Royals continue to set their total wins record as they improved their record to 36-9.

In the first game, Thomas jumped out with a 2-0 lead in the first inning and the Royals responded in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own to put the score at 2-1.  

The Nighthawks went up three runs on the Royals with a two run third inning. The Royals closed the gap with a two run inning of their own in the fourth.  All-conference starting pitcher Jerrica Sanchez provided help on the mound and at the plate as she hit a two run double to right center to drive in the two runs of the inning.

Thomas answered with two more runs in the top of the fifth but the Royals bats began to pickup as they knocked in three more runs. Team triples leader Jen Steadham led off the inning with her sixth triple of the season, Staci Fernandez followed with a single and FSC Player of the Year Jessica Sanchez followed with a two run double to center field to bring Steadham and Fernandez home. Hope Franklin drove in the third run of the inning with a RBI single through the left side.

With the score tied at six in the bottom of the seventh inning and the possibility of extra innings looming, Jessica Sanchez proved why she was named Player of the Year as hit a two run homer to left center field to end the game, her fourth of the season.

The Royals carried the momentum from the first game into the nightcap as they opened the game with a three run first inning.

The Royals exploded in the top of the third with five more runs to put the score at 8-1, not done the Royals offense continued to terrorize the Warriors defense as they scored in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.

The Royals are the number one seed in the tournament and will play the winner of the Webber International vs. Savannah College of Art & Design at 1 p.m. today.
